Guest Blog Post with Sarah Jane Avory

Well, this blog post will be a bit different, for today I'm going to interview the star of the series! *loud cat meow* Oh... er... and her cat as well.

So, first off, what is your name and how old are you?

Hi! I'm Briley Forester, and this is my cat, Smokey. I'm aged 22. Well... er... I think I am.

You're not sure of your age? How come?

Yeah, there's been so much magic in my life recently I'm not quite sure now. I'd explain it, but I have a feeling not everyone knows of my exploits. I heard someone wrote a book about me. Perhaps you should read it...

So where do you live?

Well, I used to live alone with my cat at a small village called Mepal. But these days I'm on another world - literally! - at a place called Maepole. It's a bit of an old place, and sleeping on a bed of straw can be a real pain, but the people are friendly and I'm starting to fit in. Well, there are some people who don't like me, but they have their reasons, so I try to avoid them. I'm staying with the Baxters. Well, me and my cat, Smokey. We have our own corner, so that's okay. Sure beats starving and freezing to death outside!

Do you have a job?

Oh, yeah!  The Baxters are a family of bakers. Leofard does all the baking, and his wife, Clarissa, sorts out all the orders. I work for them delivering bread to the village. I'm not alone doing this. There's this girl, Lynet, who works as well. I've met her, and she's nice. Smokey helps out too. He catches a lot of mice... or so he tells me. Ugh! I just wish he wouldn't go into so much detail!

You talk to your cat?

Oh, yeah! You see, when I arrived, I found out I can talk to Smokey. It's not like you and me talking now. I mean, he still meows and cries and purrs and stuff, but when he does, I hear his words inside my head. Not just him but all the other cats too! Me and Smokey share a special connection. I can sense him, and I know he senses me. Well, he tells me enough.

But I can't understand your cat. Why is that?

*laughs*
Oh, but you're not a witch! I am, although I still don't understand why and how. But it's good. I found out that only witches can understand cats. And I just love it! I always wondered what Smokey was thinking, and now I know. Yeah, all the gruesome details... But I love him, and he loves me. Er... well... in a best friend way. But magic... Oh, I think it's knda neat now, and old witch Branwen helps me out a lot. She's real good with potions and the like. Smokey doesn't like some of the big spells I can do, but he's just a big Fraidy cat. *laughs* Isn't that right, Smokey? *cat meows rather loudly*

Your cat is named Smokey?

Yeah, but that's because of his fur. I know he looks all black now, but when the sunlight catches him the right way, his fur looks kinda smoke-grey, and it looks like there are wisps of smoke running through his fur. So I named him Smokey. I rescued him from an RSPCA cat shelter. Well, he kinda picked me. The other cats were all asleep, but there was this one black kitten who was up on his feet and meowing as if his life depended on it! So I just had to pick him. I'm glad I did. He's been the best cat ever! Especially now, with everything that's been going on in my life. He's been my rock, and has kept me from going crazy. *sharp meow from cat* Oh, I mean crazier. I'd be lost without him.

Oh, is there someone special in your life?

*blushes* Yeah, there's this guy Sebastian. I wasn't sure about him at first, me being so bad at socialising and all, but he's really cute, and friendly... and he makes my heart do strange things. *blushes* Er... good things.

What's your favourite food and drink?

Oh, I just love a good mug of mint tea! Best thing is, they have mint in Maepole, so I'm real happy about that! As for food... er... I eat whatever is on offer. Clarissa makes a pretty good stew, so I can't complain. Sometimes we have fish, and so does Smokey. But living with the Baxters means I get fresh bread a lot. I'll say this for Leofard, he bakes a mean bread roll! Oh, so yummy!

What about your parents?

Well, my dad left home when I was young. I still blame myself for that. Perhaps I wasn't a good enough little girl... oh... I dunno.... Mum told me it wasn't anything to do with me, but she would say that, yeah? Anyway, doesn't matter now. I can't reach them any more. I miss them, but I hope to meet them again one day. I want to make them proud of me, so I'm trying my hardest in the new world.

Er... I'm sorry, but that sounds like Clarissa calling me. Gotta go!

I understand. Well, thanks for the interview.

You're welcome! Hey, you ought to go talk to some of the other villagers. Some of them are really quite interesting...

Well that's all for now! Thanks for reading!
