Every day I discover something new about myself.
Today's discovery isn't necessarily a shock, but a reminder:
Suni and Whit are completely different people. (Reminder: Suni is the name I gave to the crazy author in my head, Whit is the normal one)
Whit likes to Plan. She lives and dies by to-do lists and schedules and tasks and resources and progress bars. She's not pleased unless she can see measurable, planned and consistent progress. She's focused on efficiencies and making sure everything is on track.
So in the spirit of efficiencies, Whit decided to put Suni on a project plan for Conviction. Estimated word count goals every day with an estimated completion date sometime in March. And Whit even accounted for Suni's crazy by giving her plenty of buffer room to get it all done.
And then Suni shut down.
I sat in front of a computer and knew what I wanted to write, but all I ended up doing was stare at the to-do and the timeline and think that I wasn't working fast enough. Putting down even a few hundred words was painful.
So the other day, I decided to delete the to-dos and the scheduled times and the end date. And Suni responded by dropping 5,000 words in Conviction and resolving all the plot issues I'd been wrestling with.
So here's The Thing I Learned About Myself: I can plan Whit's tasks until the cows come home. But I need to keep my planning mitts off of Suni's creative process.
Message received, Suni.
Bitch.
