Welcome author Aoife Marie Sheridan!

I'm super stoked to highlight Aoife this week. She's the tireless force behind the Goodreads Paranormal (etc) group that highlights a new author every week. So I thought, well why don't I highlight HER for a week?

Be completely honest: how much of your main character is really you?

Not much. Abigail was one of the most complex characters I wrote. Her shyness would definitely be me, and sometimes the way she phrases things, but overall she is just a character. Because she has a drink problem and suffered so much as a child I had to really sit down and think about the person she is and how her suffering would shape her.

Also be honest - how much of your villain is based on a real person?

Villains in my eyes are not all evil. To me I do base them on real people but it is normally several people that I have crossed paths with in my life. I understand that people are not born evil, but life can be harsh and we can either fight to stay good or embrace the darkness. I think people that do bad things in life, choose too; due to feeling they have some right to hurt others as they were hurt. I love trying to get deep inside the mind of a Villain and I always find I have compassion for them.

What do you tell yourself before you start writing?

I always say that I should write for myself, tell a story I wish to read, but I also love to place some sort of lesson in it, even though most of my writing is paranormal or fantasy I like to make sure some sort of reality is weaved into the tale.

Look to your left, what's there?

My gym bag. LOL. I need to empty it, wash my gym clothes and get ready for the gym tomorrow.

How long ago did you finish eating it?

I eat last night, went out for food with my sister. The food wasn’t great so didn’t eat much, but your question reminds me that I better get up and make some breakfast. ☺

What's the worst part about being an indie author?

The unknown I suppose. The dream of wanted to reach as many people as possible but not being able to understand how to do it. It becomes frustrating.

What's the best part about being an indie author?

The best is the control. (I am not a control freak) LOL. But if I fail, I fail no one else, so if I wish to succeed then I need to put in the time and effort to succeed.

What advice would you give to other writers:

I would definitely say that a marketing plan before you even write is the best way to go. To understand that yes we all love to write and tell a story, but at the end of the day, we also want to do it full-time, and in order to do that you need to look at your work as a product. A product that you need to sell in order to keep writing. So a marketing plan would be the very first thing I feel should be done.

Secondly the product itself I have seen so many authors give this advice and it’s vital. You need to believe in your book 100% and the only way you can do that if the contents and packaging are something to be proud of. So make sure that it’s edited correcting, it’s your best writing, the cover and synopsis are the best they can be.

What are your favorite characters that you have created? Tell us about them

I just love Cathy. She is part of Abigail’s group. Her story and background are very sad but it gives her a flair. Cathy can be nasty or overly self-confident but she does all this to hide her insecurities her full story comes to light in Book Two (Hunted). But she was fun to write.

Secondly of course is Abigail. She was a very complex character to write. She’s an alcoholic so I had to do a bit of research on this. Also her trauma of seeing her family die has damaged her. She’s fuelled with anger, guilt and self-doubt constantly. We don’t see Abigail in a happy light until we reach Book two (Hunted). We see a more mellow side to her. Over all it was a challenge to write her, but I enjoyed it.

What music do you listen to, while writing?

I have a playlist for hunters. I listened to all these songs on repeat.

1. Another Love By Tom Odell

2. Seven Nation Army By White Stripes

3. Swedish House Mafia (Club scene)

4.Watchtower Delvin Feat - Ed Sheeran

5. Clown by Emeli Sande

6.Runaway By Linkin Park

7. In the End By Linkin Park

8. Talk By Kodaline
